Sungsudong To Become Center For Shoe Industry

Sungsudong in Seoul's Sungdong District is set to become the center of the capital's shoe industry. The Seoul Metropolitan Government says it will provide various support for the Sungdong District for the next two years, focusing on development shoe design and marketing areas. Under the plan, a‘shoe development project’between shoe designers and master shoe artisans from local shoe factories will be carried out, while special lectures for people in the industry will also be held. Meanwhile, in keeping with the shoe project, Sungsoo station on subway line 2 will be renovated with a gigantic red high-heel structure by 2014.■

You can count on one set of toes the number of shoe artisans around the world--Manolo Blahnik, Salvatore Ferragamo, and now a name that is setting out to become more familiar in the United States--Sergio Rossi.

The 40-year-old Sergio Rossi firm, known for its sexy stilettos, has been one of those successful but small European companies that lacked only a major cash infusion to become a worldwide brand. "To survive in this century, you need to have an organization and long-term plans," said marketing director Gianvito Rossi, son of founder Sergio Rossi.
